MacBook running extremely slow

I have a white MacBook, bought in August of 2007. It is currently running on snow leopard.
The problem is is the computer is running insanely slew. When it first boots up, it runs fine for about 2 minutes, I can click and three internet is fine and programs open. However, after that, it starts to freeze. The little rainbow spinner is almost constantly up. For instance, I have been typing up letters this morning but have only been able to write 2 total, because the computer is so slow. I copied a paragraph from one document to the other and it took 7 minutes to paste.
What should I do? What do you think is wrong? I was thinking of doing a clean reinstall of snow leopard. I don't have Applecare.
Also as I am typing this on my phone, it sounds like my computer is making this faint snoring noise like it's trying really hard to think. I knowing have like no memory on this thing because that's the way it came, but do you think buying new memory and doing a complete clean install would help me? I can't afford a nee computer, that's for sure
