internet issues

I have a MacBook and am currently running OS 10.5.8. The past few months I have had a lot of problems loading pages on the internet. I got back and forth between using Safari and Firefox. The pages will timeout when loading or cannot be found. I have to hit refresh multiple times. I have trouble loading basic pages like google.com and yahoo.com. I know OS 10.9 just came out a few months ago.

Do you think part of my problem is that my OS system is outdated? Any other suggestions?

Hard to say without more information (not that I'm an expert), but I suspect it's more likely a problem with your Internet connection. We were having problems somewhat like this and my husband discovered that our home network was experiencing a DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service attack) via our satellite TV connection to the Internet. It's also possible that your internet connection is somehow broken -- either because of a problem with your set-up or because of problems with your internet service provider (sometimes their service breaks down, but in my experience, they NEVER admit to it unless you pretty much beat it out of them). Other factors could conceivably be the age of your MacBook, the amount of memory it has, and what versions of Safari and Firefox you're using. Updating your OS probably wouldn't hurt, but the version you're using isn't so out-of-date that I'd think it would cause you to have trouble loading things like the basic Google page.

Good luck!
Thank you. My husb has a PC and he does not have any issues. I checked online and there are no updates for my computer which is why I was thinking it's related to my OS system. I haven't had any updates in almost 2 years.
Kind of depends on your Internet connection setup. If you're on a wireless router or modem, or even on a wired one, an older one might give you that kind of error. On my previous MacBook I had the same problem sometimes, and did the same thing you did - just switched to Safari when Firefox acted up, and to Google Chrome when both of those acted up. I'm on 10.8 now and I don't have that same problem, so upgrading your OS might help fix it.

I don't know for certain but it may be your OS. I know a lot of sites do make it to where you you need the newest stuff but don't quote me on that because I know that Leopard isn't THAT old (I've had the same MacBook since 2009 and it came with Leopard).

You may be able to upgrade to Mavericks depending on how old your MacBook is. Like I said, I got mine in '09 (it's a white pre-unibody) and I got Mavericks when it came out. But judging by what you're saying it may not be an option since you need to get up to Mountain Lion at the most to get it since it's a download only option. Of course you may be able to get it without the Mac App Store but I just don't know.
